Lilian Akin is an attorney in private practice that
specializes in education law and the rights of children in public
school systems. Her primary focus is representing children and families
in special education due process hearings and expulsion proceedings,
as well as District Justice and Juvenile Court Hearings.
Lilian has been selected as a consultant to the Duquesne University
Charter School Project, the Disabilities Law Project, and as an adoption
consultant to Every Child, Inc. She is a sought after lecturer and
often conducts classes and seminars about education law issues for
parent groups and professionals. Lilian has provided training and
technical assistance to other lawyers through Continuing Legal Education
courses for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute and Allegheny Community
College.
A native of Pennsylvania, Lilian is a Graduate of
Bucknell University and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
She later gained invaluable experience working as a staff attorney
for the Education Law Center (western PA region) for 7 years. Lilian
has directed the intervention project for at-risk children for the
Allegheny Children's Initiative, Inc. and is familiar with child developmental,
mental health and family issues. Lilian volunteers as a Big Sister
and has volunteered her services as a Court Appointed Special Advocate
(CASA). Lilian is committed to upholding the rights of children to
a just and appropriate education, as prescribed by law.
